8db Linux Support is a trade name of db8 Website Support (KvK 09147268), founded in 2005 by Peter Martin in Nijmegen.
Since 2005, db8 Website Support has helped companies and organizations build, optimize, and maintain websites. The name db8 refers to the power of a database: a website backed by a database offers endless possibilities. The number 8 symbolizes the infinity sign.
From Joomla to Linux
Peter has worked with Joomla since 2005, open-source software for content management systems. He is active in the Dutch and international Joomla community as a volunteer and knowledge sharer. In 2007 he switched from Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux. Missing personal contact and knowledge exchange, he founded the Linux User Group Nijmegen in 2012. It organizes monthly meetings about Linux and open source.
More than sharing knowledge
Demand for Linux desktop support turned out to be high, while commercial offerings are limited. That is why Peter started linuxgids.nl: an overview of companies that offer Linux support. When Microsoft announced it would end Windows 10 support, he also organized Linux Install Parties to help users switch for free.
Why 8db
Many companies provide Linux support for servers, but few for desktops. Because Peter enjoys Linux and works with it daily, he decided to focus on that under the name 8db Linux Support. And the logo? If you look at the db8 logo in a mirror, as if you were viewing the back of the website from the Linux server, you read 8db. So we operate between the hardware (computer/server) and the application (website/office software). Exactly the place where we work.
